Mesa Ranger District Desert Walks

The Mesa Ranger District volunteer program provides nature walks for all types of community groups on the Lower Salt River and at Tortilla Flat Campground.

Walks on the Lower Salt River are conducted by Amy Beth Ward, a retired educator who is knowledgeable in the history and culture of the area, and plants and wildlife of the desert.

Walks at Tortilla Flat Campground are conducted by Betty Ann Sutton, a retired educator.

You do not have to buy a Tonto Pass to attend a nature walk.   At each event, we issue a free pass that is good for the time of the walk only.  These walks are not strenuous but may involve some inclines.

If you'd like to sign up a group for a special walk on the Lower Salt River please contact Amy Beth Ward, the program coordinator at 509-312-9074.  (This number is only to make reservations, not for other questions about the Forest).
